Powering Peace of Mind: 850kVA worth of CATERPILLAR reliability, Building works, Fuel delivery works, and a challenging lift.

When the lights go out at a retired services league, the stakes are higher than comfort — they are financial. Here's how we delivered a turnkey 850kVA backup power solution for Ballina RSL Club.

Powering Peace of Mind: 850kVA worth of CATERPILLAR reliability, Building works, Fuel delivery works, and a challenging lift.

Ballina RSL's replacement generator sits inside a mechanical plant room on Level 2, near the middle of the building. Removing the old set and getting a new one into place was never going to be a standard delivery.

The replacement was a CAT 850 kVA diesel generator supplied with a 10-year extended warranty. Before it could be installed, we coordinated engineered scaffolding, site-access controls and the temporary removal of part of the plant-room roof.

A 250-tonne crane completed the lift. The crane counterweights alone arrived on four trucks. With the generator in position, the roof and associated building work were reinstated. CPS managed the electrical, mechanical, crane, scaffolding and building contractors so the club had one point of responsibility throughout the job.

The plant-room location also required a custom exhaust silencer and exhaust system. At ground level, a new diesel storage tank supplies the generator through a dedicated fuel-transfer system. The controls stop the transfer pumps automatically when the generator day tank reaches capacity, while still allowing safe servicing and maintenance.

Electrically, the new generator was integrated with the club's existing automatic transfer switch. The control work also prevents the on-site solar system from feeding back into the generator while the building is operating on emergency power.

Commissioning included protection and control tests, ATS verification, simulated mains failures, fuel-transfer tests, full-load operation and electrical compliance checks. The system was then handed over with its operating and maintenance records.

CPS continues to service and test the installation. For a generator in a difficult location, ongoing maintenance matters: another major crane lift is not something anyone wants to organise because a small service issue was missed.
