Capital Power Systems & Gold Coast Generators recently completed a complex turnkey generator replacement for Ballina RSL Club, delivering a reliable long-term emergency power solution with minimal disruption to the facility.
The project involved replacing the existing generator with a new CAT 850kVA diesel generator, supplied with a 10-year extended warranty for additional operational confidence and asset protection.
A challenging Level 2 plant-room installation- The generator was located inside, and in the middle of a mechanical plant room on Level 2, making access and installation significantly more involved than a standard ground-level replacement.
To safely remove the existing equipment and position the new generator, the project required: Engineered scaffolding and site-access controls Temporary removal of a section of the building roof A 250-tonne crane to lift the generator into position- the counter-weights alone were delivered by 4x trucks Reinstatement of the roof and associated building works Careful coordination between electrical, mechanical, crane and building contractors all manged by Capital Power Systems.
Our team managed the project from initial planning through to final handover, providing Ballina RSL with one point of responsibility throughout the works and a full turn-key solution.
Custom exhaust and fuel-transfer systems- Due to the generator’s location and the requirements of the mechanical plant room, the installation included a custom-designed exhaust silencer and exhaust system.
A dedicated fuel-transfer system was also installed to move diesel from the new ground-level fuel storage tank to the generator located on Level 2. The completed system provides reliable fuel delivery while supporting safe operation, servicing and ongoing maintenance. Safety protections were engineered into the solution to ensure reliable, automatic shut-off of the fuel delivery pumps when the generator fuel cell reached capacity.
Electrical integration and testing- The new 850kVA generator was integrated with Ballina RSL’s existing automatic transfer switch system.
Following installation, our technicians completed comprehensive compliance and operational testing, including: Generator protection and control testing including integration with the on-site solar system to prevent solar feeding into the generator. Verification of the existing ATS operation Automatic mains-failure simulations Fuel-transfer system testing Full load testing Electrical compliance testing System commissioning and client handover
These tests confirmed that the generator, transfer system and supporting infrastructure operated correctly under simulated emergency conditions.
